SEAT launched a young driver scheme just over a year ago; this scheme puts 11 to 17 year olds behind the wheel of a SEAT. There are seven centres nationwide at the moment; SEAT and Admiral who sponsor the scheme are looking to add more sites as the scheme’s popularity grows.

The youngsters are put behind the wheel of a dual control vehicle alongside a Government approved driving instructor, they are then given valuable experience of real world driving conditions in a safe, secure and contained environment on private land.

Although the scheme is primarily aimed at educating future drivers on safe driving, the scheme can also be great fun. A similar type of scheme in Sweden helped reduce road traffic accidents by 40%, for those who had taken part. SEAT dealers in Kent are hoping a similar improvement can be made in the UK too.

A spokeswoman for SEAT Young Driver said, "The accident statistics involving young drivers in this country are very worrying, and it's clear that there is a genuine need for youngsters to learn basic driving skills before they go out on the public road. We help youngsters experience car control and learn hazard recognition, and make it good fun for them at the same time."

Lessons are available at weekends and school holidays at venues from Glasgow to Southampton, the lessons are provided in either 30- or 60-minute slots, and are available to youngsters between 11 and 17, with a minimum height of 1.5 metres.

Steve Robertson, Head of Marketing at SEAT UK was very pleased with the scheme so far and said: "The SEAT Young Driver programme has already proved its worth with more than 10,000 sessions run successfully so far. I'm sure the idea of a gift voucher will prove really popular this Christmas."
