Audi had a philosophy, they would only ever produce one RS model at a time, but recently this has changed. We now have the RS3, RS4, RSTT and RS5 all available as new at the same time. The RS4 is the more established of the lot, it has been around for longer, competing against the BMW M3 and the Mercedes C63 AMG.

The first RS4 model was an estate version of the Audi A4, this model ran from 2000 to 2001, the next generation RS4 was available as a 4 door saloon and convertible as well as an estate version; it was in production from 2002 to 2008. The RS4 sits just above the Audi S4, the performance version of the A4. Although they look quite similar the RS4 has flared front and rear wheel arches to allow for a wider axle track. It also includes two larger frontal side air intakes for the two additional side-mounted coolant radiators.

The mighty RS4 is powered by a 4.2 litre V8 engine, it uses Audi’s Fuel Stratified Injection (FSI) system. This is the same engine from the larger Audi Q7 but with some modifications such as, increased crankscase breathing, Vibrational Dampner, Fuel return system, Baffled oil pan(to prevent cavitation),Pistons and connecting rods.

The RS4 engine produces 420bhp and 317 lbs/ft of torque; it can do 0-62mph in 4.8 seconds and has a top speed of 155mph which is electronically limited. It has a slick six-speed manual gearbox, with an inertia-free drive train. The new Audi RS4 in Newbury has provided good competition for the BMW M3 for many years now and it’s proved difficult to choose between the two.
