Volvo has been working closely with Ener1 - a leading manufacturer of lithium-ion energy storage systems. The partnership between Ener1 and Volvo has been growing strong in recent years; the lithium-ion battery company is providing the Electric Volvo C30 with battery power.

There has always been some concern around how the electric power train, batteries and power delivery cables would cope in a collision. Volvo has attempted to put buyers’ mind at rest by displaying a crashed tested electric Volvo C30 at the North American International Auto Show. The crashed test car contained fully charged and operational Ener1 EnerDel batteries.

Volvo President and CEO Stefan Jacoby was happy to demonstrate the crashed vehicle with intact batteries, power train and main electric cables. Stefan Jacobby also confirmed that a test fleet of C30 Electric cars will go on the road in the U.S. in 2011 following recent announcements of fleets in Europe and Asia.
Volvo President, Stefan Jacoby said, "Our tests show it is vital to separate the batteries from the electric car's crumple zones to make it as safe as a conventional car," Jacoby said at a press conference. "We are the first car maker to show the world what a truly safe electric car looks like after a collision with high-speed impact."

Ener1 said that to ensure the battery is safely located outside of the crumple zones, it has developed a "split battery" specifically for Volvo with half the battery located in the central tunnel between the seats and the other half under the rear seats where the petrol tank would normally be located in a used Volvo C70 in Maldon.
