Buying so-called green cars are becoming more and more popular and one reason for this is that they no longer involve a compromise as compared to normal car models. In many instances a green car can be no different to a regular car.

The official criterion for gaining low CO2 green car status is to emit less than 100g/km CO2. This gives financial benefits when insuring your car as well as road tax and London Congestion Charge exemptions. These financial benefits and the payback you get from paying less money in fuel are some of the reasons why more people are buying green cars now than ever.

A top five list of bestselling green cars has the Toyota IQ in fifth spot. This is a small city car which emits 99g/km CO2 and can deliver an average of 72.4mpg. The car has four seats so it’s larger than most city cars. It comes with a 1.0-litre engine.

In fourth spot we find the Smart Fortwo which emits only 86g/km of CO2. The Smart Fourtwo diesel version is also the UK’s most fuel efficient car averaging a massive 85.6mpg. No wonder it sells so well despite only being a two-seater.

Third on the list of most-selling green cars is the Mini where the 1.6-litre diesel version emits 99g/km of CO2 and does an average of 74.3mpg. It’s however beaten by the larger Toyota Auris which is a petro-electric hybrid car. The Auris does and average of 74.3mpg and emits only 89g/km.

But the Auris is beaten to the top spot by the Toyota Prius – the bestselling green car for many years now and also in many cases the best rated. The hybrid car emits 89g/km of CO2 and does 72.4mpg. It’s a genuine 5-seater family car and consequently gives you a lot of ‘green’ for your money.

In addition to the top five other bestsellers include the Vauxhall Corsa with carbon emissions of 94g/km and the Volkswagen Golf which emits 99g/km.

All-in-all the bestseller list consists of a healthy mix of larger family cars and smaller city run-arounds which must mean there is a green car out there for everyone. If you fancy a Vauxhall, Oakham is one place you’ll find a dealer.
